Assurance Associate - Level 1

Position Purpose

The Assurance Associate is responsible for contributing to the achievement of our Assurance Business Line objectives including:

  • Assisting with audit and attest clients assigned to you by a Director or Manager;
  • Assisting with office administration including participating in firm meetings, entering your time and performing audit and attest preparation work; and
  • Collaborating with others to develop innovative audit and attest practices that adhere to professional standards.

Director, Manager, Audit Supervisor

Position Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of an Assurance Associate are:

  • Engagement Participation
    • Managing time budgets for assigned tasks, raising red flags to the engagement supervisor when a project goes beyond the expected scope or is moving toward a budgetary or timing overage; and
    • Communicating the engagement status with the engagement supervisor timely.
  • Technical and Client Service Skills
    • Engagement preparation and client file setup;
    • Trial balance and lead sheet setup;
    • Creating and updating schedules including calculations, analyses layout and referencing; 
    • Vouching and tracing to and from client documents;
    • Designing and performing analytical procedures;
    • Reconciling and rolling forward client balances;
    • Preparation and/or updating client financial statements and firm reports;
    • Professional interaction with client personnel on an as needed basis;
    • Meeting rising standards of quality control while maintaining our engagement approach;
    • Attending Continuing Professional Education seminars as assigned;
    • Proficiency in the use of Word and Excel;
    • Respond to review notes timely, thoroughly and concisely;
    • Become familiar with the use of computer assisted audit techniques;
    • Prepare financial statements from a trial balance:
      • Balance sheet, income statement or statement of activities and statement of cash flows.
    • Ability to perform designed audit procedures in conformity with professional standards, with direction and supervision, in the following areas:
      • Cash
      • Investments
      • Receivables
      • Inventory
      • Payables
      • Cash Disbursements
      • Payroll
  • Administration
    • Adhering to the office administration and personnel policies of Marvin including timely entering of hours and expenses into the time and billing system;
    • Accurate preparation and timely submission of expense reports with appropriate documentation;
    • Participating in the firm’s strategic planning process when requested; and
    • Advocating “best practices” suited to this practice area.

Education and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, as well as Masters degree or equivalent hours requirement with commitment  to pursue CPA certificate;
  • Good written and verbal communication skills;
  • Good research skills;
  • Positive, can-do demeanor with willingness to “dig in” and get the work done;
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment; and
  • Willingness to ask questions timely.

Audit Associate - Beginning In-Charge

Position Purpose:

Assisting with existing Marvin and Company, P.C. (MARVIN) client accounts assigned to you by guiding the performance of audit engagement plans from the planning phase through completion; instructing and supervising staff assigned to an engagement and reviewing their work; and by performing audit procedures.      

Position Responsibilities:

  • Engagement Management and Service Delivery
  • Planning engagements (under the supervision of the manager or director)
  • Resource scheduling and schedule management including establishing budgets for time spent in each phase, and then directing MARVIN resources to meet the budgets and client expectations set
  • Assigning tasks to staff and supervising those staff assigned to his/her projects to insure that schedules, budgets, and quality requirements are met. Monitoring status and completion of assignments, and shifting the workload as needed to ensure completion within the timeline. An appropriate amount of time should be spent training staff on their assigned tasks, along with follow-up and on-going review of their work.
  • Coordinating the fieldwork and delivery schedule with the client.
  • Communicating the engagement status with the client, their advisors, and the manager/director on a timely and ongoing basis 
  • Preparing management letters and other required client communication
  • Reviewing and updating our understanding of internal control
  • Monitoring all aspects of field work, ensuring that all applicable procedures are followed and complete
  • Wrap-up of all requirements on an engagement prior to submission to the Manager/Director for review.

Skills and Education Required:

  • CPA certificate preferred or desire to pursue CPA certificate and an interest in working for a mid-size CPA firm
  • At least 2 years of recent auditing experience in a CPA firm
  • Not-for-profit and A-133 experience preferred
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good understanding, comprehension, and ability to articulate auditing and accounting concepts
  • Strong leadership, project management, and team building skills

Paid Accounting Intern - Latham or Queensbury Office

Marvin and Company is looking for a Paid Accounting Intern. At Marvin and Company, interns are given an extensive assortment of diversified accounting assignments under the direct supervision of Marvin and Company staff. This internship will give you firsthand knowledge of what it is like to work in a CPA firm. Interns are given careful consideration for full-time employment with the Firm upon successful completion of their internship and degree program.

 

Requirements:

Applicants should be Accounting or Business majors with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Attention to detail, the ability to multi-task and excellent communication skills are all essential to this position.

Interns may work out of the Latham or Queensbury, NY office.

Tax Associate in Latham
